Time Line TherapyŽ is a collection of techniques that allow you to gain emotional control over your life. Inappropriate emotional reactions, such as bursts of anger, periods of apathy, depression, sadness, anxiety, and chronic fear, are responsible for preventing people from achieving the quality of life they desire. Limiting decisions, such as "I'm not good enough," "I'll never be rich," or "I don't deserve a great marriage," create false limitations and hamper your ability to create reachable and attainable goals and outcomes. Your Time Line
People have a way of knowing inside them exactly how the past and exactly how the future is stored. That is to say, at the level of the Unconscious Mind, you have an organisation of all of the memories. You know the difference between something that happened last week and a happy memory from, say when you were 12 years old. The question is how do you know the difference. Well, the answer is that your unconscious mind somehow encodes those memories so that you know the difference between the two, and thats what is called the Time Line. The Time Line doesnt have to be linear, it could be more spatial. It doesnt have to be a straight line, it could be a curved line. It doesnt even have to be a line, it could be lump or a flowing river over a plain. There are limitless possibilities and however you do the Time Line is perfect.
How do you discover how you do your Time Line? What is the First Event which is the cause of your current condition? How can we delete a negative emotion, e.g. anger, sadness, fear, hurt and guilt?
Consider this for a moment:
- How much has fear stopped you in your life? How much has it stopped you meeting the people you wanted to meet? What about fear in your job? How often has fear stopped you making that sale or picking up the phone and making that acquaintance? How many times has fear stopped you from communicating with a client in a way that would make them want to be able to....? How many times have you not been able to talk to your boss, to get the salary that you know you deserve? How many times has fear stopped you from getting your ideas right; stopped you from making your life more magnificent? One of the problems with fear is that it stops us from trying things which, if we tried, we would probably succeed at. In fact, you probably remember, in your own life, that when you overcame your fears, you probably succeeded.
- What about anger? How many times has anger stopped you from getting what you want? Think of, perhaps times with your parents or with your kids where you started to communicate in a way that would have worked for you and then perhaps you said things that you didnt mean. Perhaps you went into it with goods intentions, saying I really want to communicate, but then up comes the anger and youre back into it again. The same old pattern. What would happen if you could be free of all your anger? Think if how many times you get...well, you may not call it angry, you may call it frustrated...with things the way they are? Stuck in traffic in town or city! How many times has anger interfered with your experience of life?
- What about guilt? How many times have you felt guilty inappropriately since childhood. After all, youre a grown up now! How many times have you felt guilt over things that you felt? Or, even perhaps about things that you did? How many times has guilt kept you from experiencing your life more fully?
- And how about hurt? One of the things about hurt is that it makes us remember all the past hurt. Like most of us get into a relationship and bring with us all our emotional baggage. We carry it with us. What would happen if you could let it go? You are going along in a relationship and all of a sudden something triggers and up come all the past hurts. You remember all the past hurts and youre not going to let that happen again, are you! Think about how much better youd be without all the past hurts. Think how you would be if you could clear out all the past times when youd been hurt emotionally, or even physically. What if you could clear them all out and just let them go? You could see how you could do that in Time Line TherapyŽ.
- The same with sadness. How many times have you been sad, maybe over the loss of a friendship, or somewhere along the line sad about some opportunities you may have missed. What would happen if you could be free of all your sadness? What if it could just totally disappear? So one of the things you will learn is how to get rid of negative emotions, including anger, fear, guilt, hurt and sadness. Clear them out so they are not an issue in your life.
Now its important that you remember when we talk about negative emotions that they're not necessarily bad. All emotions are good, but some get in the way of us being the totally magnificent human beings that we can be, that we know we are inside. Some emotions keep us from expressing things how wed like to. Some emotions keep us from having all the things that we want. Thats what is meant by negative emotions - emotions that dont feel good in the body. When you get angry, do you say that feels great and youll go and get some more! Last time you were sad, did you say that feels great and Ill turn up the sadness! No, you didnt say that. Did you welcome guilt? No.
Negative emotions just dont feel good in the body. They tell us we have been offended in some way. Usually its our values that have been offended. The problem with negative emotions is that they are stored in the body. They are stored physiologically. What happens is that they have the possibility of blocking the flow of energy and information through the neural-network pathways. This blocking has a direct causal effect in dis-ease. What would happen if you could be free of all of those causes? Contrast the days when you had lots of energy to get out of bed in the morning and those days when you could hardly crawl above the sheets! Negative emotions take energy. They take energy in themselves and they take energy to repress in the body. They are not good for the body. Thats why in Time Line TherapyŽ there is an emphasis on clearing out all negative emotions. This does not mean that you cannot experience them again in the future if you need to. If you need to be angry again in the future, you will be able to. Any negative emotion will be available to you, if you need them.
How do you remove a limiting decision? A limiting decision can be removed using Time Line TherapyŽ. What kind of limiting decisions? How about the limiting decision that its not OK for me to make a lot of money? How about the limiting decision that I dont deserve to have abundance in my life? Simply clearing your limiting decisions can typically double your income within a year, particularly if you are in sales. Have you ever decided that youre not attractive enough, that youre body doesnt look right, that its not perfectly OK for you to have a relationship that works, that its not OK for you to feel good about yourself or that you should be miserable. How do you remember to do that? Was there ever a time when you didnt or when you werent? When did you make that limiting decision? What if you could go back and eliminate that limiting decision and re-evaluate all the events between then and now? You could lose behaviour that doesnt support you, that doesnt support your happiness. Removing a limiting decision is a very important technique in Time Line TherapyŽ.
How your Time Line is organised in relation to your body has a major effect on your personality. Changing the direction and location of the Time Line is a method available in therapy to effect a change in your personality to eliminate unwanted behaviour. Time Line TherapyŽ is not so much about categorising personality, but about effecting change, especially in relation to a persons ability to organise their lives and on their perception of life and things in life.
